Michael Sakell has a bachelor’s degree in music education (with choral music as a concentration) from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. During his time at James Madison, he served as Director of the Women’s Chorus and was founder of the all male ensemble “Kor”. Before moving to California, he spent four years teaching choral music at Dixon-Smith Middle School in Stafford, VA. During his time at Dixon-Smith, he expanded the program to almost 280 singers and consistently had superior ratings for his choirs. Sakell recently served as Director of the Men’s Chorus of San Diego State University during his master’s program in choral conducting. In San Diego, he has performed as a soloist and professional chorister with multiple professional organizations, including the Bach Collegium Ensemble and San Diego Master Chorale. He also served as an artistic Director for the San Diego Children’s Choir and specializes in the changing male voice. He also serves as a section leader at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in San Diego. Throughout Sakell’s music career, he has performed in multiple professional choirs and venues in the Washington D.C. area, including the Kennedy Center, the National Cathedral, and the Church of the Epiphany. He has served as a guest clinician for multiple honor’s choirs and judged many festivals and assessments. This is his second year at Chula Vista High School, first as Director of all choirs. In his first year, he also served as Director of the beginning and advanced ensembles at Chula Vista Middle School, which received superior ratings for the first time since in 12 years.
